Research shows veterinary visits can be stressful for dogs, part of this stress is due to certain handling techniques that is necessary for examination and procedures.
Assistant Professor Lee Niel, Col. K.L. Campbell Chair in Companion Animal Welfare and PhD Candidate, Anastasia Stellato at the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph are conducting a new research study that aims to improve veterinary care for dogs by identifying and reducing stress during routine veterinary examinations.
If you have any questions or concerns about this research, please feel free to contact Anastasia Stellato at astellat@uoguelph.ca, or Dr. Lee Niel at 519-824-4120 x53030 or niell@uoguelph.ca.

Are you interested in an opportunity to help support student
veterinarian learning?
The OVC Medical
Communication Skills Program is currently hiring people to portray
clients during simulated veterinary appointments.
This program supports veterinary student education
through recruitment and training of simulated clients who participate in simulated
interview sessions as part of the Art of Veterinary Medicine (AVM) curriculum.
What Do Simulated Clients Do? You will be interviewed by the student and portray a case as you
have been trained. You may see several students on a one-to-one basis or you
may see groups of up to 12 students in a teaching session. For many sessions, a
veterinarian coach will be present to help facilitate the students learning.
Some sessions are video-taped and most are monitored by a Medical Communication
Program staff member.
This work is flexible. Simulated clients can
participate intermittently and can work on one project per year or many. You are paid for your time.
No experience is necessary Interested in learning more? Contact us TODAY and help to educate the next generation of
veterinarians. Email medcomm@ovc.uoguelph.ca or visit OVCmedcomm.ca.

Welcome to Kaila Constand who joined the Ontario
Veterinary College on August 7 as a supervisor in the OVC Health Sciences
Centre. Kaila is a Registered Veterinary Technician who is passionate about the
veterinary industry and excited to be joining the OVC Health Science Centre
Supervisor team.
Kaila’s
passion for horses was sparked at the age of nine, when she began working at a
race horse facility in exchange for riding lessons. She continued to work on
horse farms until deciding to become a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT)
and added Animal Care Attendant to her job list about 15 years ago. She
continued to work in regular practice while pursuing a diploma through
University of Guelph’s Ridgetown Campus.
Upon
graduating, Kaila worked in emergency care at Burgess Veterinary Emergency
Clinic for four years. She later joined the Mississauga Oakville Veterinary
Emergency Clinic (VEC) team where she functioned as a ‘floating technician’
with the opportunity to work in every department. Kaila has spent the past four
years in the role of team lead and manager of Oakville VEC’s Ophthalmology
Service.
In
her down time you will find Kaila at the barn relaxing with her horse Joey and
her dog, Stryker. Some of her favorite pastimes include motorcycle rides,
sporting events and spending time with friends and family. She can often be
found at the gym training for competitive fitness events, doing hot yoga, or
outdoors on the trails.
To celebrate summer, members of the OVC SAS team will be delivering
ice cream bars within each department on Tuesday, August 21 between 1:00 and
1:30 p.m.
Please drop by for your ice cream bar in these locations:
Biomedical Sciences - Room 2613–15 (Biomed Lounge)
Clinical
Studies - Room 2106
Pathobiology - 4th

If you are a
practicing veterinarian in Ontario, please consider taking part in a NEW study being conducted by OVC
researchers.
Student veterinarian Jessica Kilkenny, Ameet
Singh, Assistant Professor in the Department of Clinical Studies, and Andria
Jones-Bitton, Associate Professor in the Department of Population Medicine are
conducting a new research study that aims to identify perceptions and
awareness of Minimally Invasive Surgery among veterinarians in Ontario.
Minimally
Invasive Surgery (MIS) is becoming a popular alternative to traditional open
surgery for the surgical treatment of large and small animal patients. The
technique involves millimeter incisions, long instruments and a camera to
access the chest cavity (thoracoscopy), abdominal cavity (laparoscopy), and
joint spaces (arthroscopy).
Despite
increased popularity, veterinarian perceptions and awareness of MIS is not well
characterized. This information is crucial as it impacts public perceptions
about MIS, how surgical patients are managed, and how future veterinarians are
trained.
Requirements for participation:
Participants must have DVM status
Participants must currently live and work in Ontario
To participate for a chance to win a VISA gift
certificate please click here.
If you have any questions or concerns about
this research, please feel free to contact Jessica Kilkenny at kilkennj@uoguelph.ca
or Dr. Ameet Singh at amsingh@uoguelph.ca.
Coming

of the industry and showcase global innovation through a Canadian perspective.
Date: September 15, 2018 Location: Delta Hotels by Marriott Guelph
The OVC

OVC students joined more than 600 DVM students from the US,
Canada, France, the Netherlands and Germany at recent 2018 National Veterinary
Scholars Symposium (NVSS). The Symposium, held August 2 to 4, was hosted by the
College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences at Texas A&M
University in College Station, Texas.
Attending with Dr. Gordon Kirby, OVC Associate Dean, Research and
Innovation, were OVC DVM students Valeria Roati, Jamie Burns, Virginia Madsen,
Michaela Botts, Elysha Smith and Angela Tiessen.
The NVSS is the
premier annual scientific colloquium which showcases research accomplishments
by veterinary students completing summer research internships. The Symposium
highlights the ways veterinary scientists advance basic and applied research to
support global health. Poster presentations from veterinary students were
featured throughout the meeting, and there were two student-focused sessions on
professional development.
